Context of practise 3 - Inspiring designers

If you read the post below I looked at designers that I admire. There are no doubt a few designers missing and I may kick myself for forgetting to put people on the list.

You will see the little debate on female designers too... because the task says I have to select one male, one female, and one group/company. However I could not think of many females for the life of me and I find that quite sad.

Mike Perry

Provide 3 samples of their work...

Reasons why I appreciate them...

I love and appreciate Mike Perry because I love his free hand style of doodling and type. When I first discovered him, I was really into his work because it is quite childlike and I was very into doodling myself at the time. He is inspiring because of the amount of great work he churns out everyday. He is also willing to share and collaborate through his books, interviews and personal work. I wish to have a piece of his work hanging on my wall one day.

Recall when/where I first heard about them

I first recall seeing Mike Perrys work when I was about 14/15 in The Tate gallery shop on holiday in Saint Ives. I discovered his amazing book Hand Job and was transfixed on his delightful exploration of hand drawn typography. I knew I wanted to be a designer but I think Hand Job pushed me one step further towards doing an ND Graphic course at six form college.

Who are they? Mike Perry
Identity Amazing beardy illustrator/designer
Gender  Male
Nationality  American

What do they specialise in?  Illustration/Design
What are they known for?  The books Hand Job and Pulled as well as very quirky illustrative style
Where are they based?  Brooklyn
When did they start? I have a feeling he started since the day he could hold a crayon
How did they develop? By drawing and experimenting everyday. He did a painting course but he hated it and he started a graphics course soon after.
How are they motivated? His surrounding, drawing, new experiences, new treasures

In this video I love his studio/working space and how he is willing to share his draws of work/secrets. I like that he doesnt dream at night because he feels like he is already in his little world during the day. He looks like he draws everyday. I feel and want to do that, I want to look at how I spend my time.

This is another interview. He is such an honest guy.

Hugo & Marie presents: An Interview With Mike Perry from hugoandmarie on Vimeo.

Finally I find this interview really interesting too.

Kate Moross

Provide 3 samples of their work...

Reasons why I appreciate them...

I appreciate Kate Moross because shes one of the first female designers to come to mind. She also isnt much older than me and she has done so much to get herself out there. She started by designing posters/flyers for her local music scene and in her first year at uni she designed a billboard campaign for Cadburys! She too just churns work out everyday and has designed for some of my favourite bands such as the Gossip. I love watching her interviews and visiting speeches at universities because for someone so young she is very charismatic and inspiring to listen to

Recall when/where I first heard about them

I first recall seeing Kate Moross's work in Topshop but I was not aware of her as a designer. It was not until first year of college that my friend Fiona introduced more of her work to me.

Reasons why I appreciate them...

I appreciate them as an agency because they seem like a dream to work for.

Recall when/where I first heard about them...

When I first started reading Little White Lies I did not realise that it was designed by an agency. Then they posted a video of the making of The Black Swan issue and I looked into the agency because I wanted to produce a magazine for my final major at college and the process of the video really inspired me.

Context of practice 3 - Favourite designers

The task is to consider my favourite designers (both genders), creatives and agencies and write a long list as possible of their names. Even research new ones as applicable.

When I first started to do this task I could not think of many female designers/admirations. I mostly knew of male admirations and this made me sad because I aspire to be a female designer. I decided to post my concerns on Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook. I had a interesting response because I and a few others felt that design should not be genderised.

On my blog people commented with statements like:

"The problem is referring to over half the population as ‘females’ rather than just focusing on the design work."

"I think you need to point out (perhaps on your blog if not in person) that by saying only ‘female’ and ‘male’ designers"

"Putting a gender on design and that’s stupid. Design is a thing, it doesn’t need a gender assigned to it"

"Have people just thrown out everyone else who doesn’t conform to the gender binary. What about transgendered deisngers? Queer designers and those who just don’t know yet?"

"What you should be focused on as a designer is the work involved and not whether or not some is a uterus owning person or a penis owning person."

My Facebook comments introduced me to new designers

PPP 1 - Creative Practice. Why Am I Here - What Do I Want To Learn

Study Task 1 Why Am I Here - What Do I Want To Learn

Using the online resources that you have been introduced to in the module briefing and based on questions raised in the studio workshop and experiences of the first 2 weeks of the course:

Answer the following questions
Identify and explain 5 reasons why you chose to study on this programme.

1. I studied BTEC Graphic design for two years at ND level at New Stamford College. I really enjoyed the course and built up a passionate creative flair for the subject. I come from a creative background and since a early age I have been surrounded by the creative industry involving my parents work and interests. I think a creative career has always been my aim and from what I have already learnt from the past two years at college, I feel Graphic design is the right path for me.

2. Secondly Leeds College Of Art has a big reputation and I felt that I wanted to be part of a small arts institute. When I looked round on the open day I was impressed with the amount of success that the BA Graphic Design course had achieved in the short space of time it had been running. I wanted to be part of that success.

3. The course numbers was also a big reason why I wanted to be part of the programme. I did not want to just be a face in a crowd of 150 students. I feel that small groups and time for one to ones is the best way to learn and get feedback.

4. The intensity of the course was an attraction too. I feel that students should be time tabled to be at uni for 4 - 5 days a week. I want to learn, meet new people and broaden my skills, I do not feel I could do that when time tabled to be in for only 2 - 3 days a week. The current economic climate is not in a good state and I want to get a good job at the end of the day that I feel passionate about.

5. The past work of graduates in the year books was also impressive when I first came to look round. The work was stuff that I was already interested in and it was at a high standard compared to other institutions.

Identify and explain 5 things that you want to learn during your time on the programme.

1. I can get quite nervous when presenting my work to a group of people so I want to learn how to present myself and my work as a professional designer in a confident manner. I think being able to present confidently makes a good impression in the eyes of the client.

2. In the past two years I have done a lot of digital design and I feel that I am lacking some practical knowledge and skills. I would love to experiment with screen printing and letter press because you then can appreciate how much effort goes into it, instead of just pressing the print button on the computer.

3. I would like to learn how to build a professional website for myself to help me promote my portfolio. I attended a talk recently and a lot of clients ask for online portfolios instead of paper based print outs now because it is faster and cheaper.

4. I am not sure what I want to be when I graduate yet however I would like to learn how to come up with new concepts and off the wall ideas about advertising. This may come under a range of different mediums ranging from posters to packaging to viral adverts.

Fiat: Traffic Signs - Drinking and driving can be tricky.

5. I would like to expand my knowledge on the Abobe software because today many studios and clients expect you to know how to use them. The software also give you that professional edge when it comes to the finish.

Identify and explain 5 skills that you think are your strengths.

1. I think I am quite good at thinking skills that include exploring ideas that are outside of the box when tackling different briefs. I never want to go for the obvious or the easy option. This may make things harder and may take me more time to do but I like a challenge and I work hard.
This is a piece of design I have done that illustrates how I think and solve problems

2. I have a passion for photography since the age of 13. I have enjoyed going out taking photographs, as well as collecting vintage photos. Over the years I have built up a good photography portfolio and I have started exploring mixing this passion with my love for words and lyrics. I have also got into collage by layering images and type together to get interesting effects. I think by enjoying what I do creatively makes me stronger when using image and words.
An example of one of my letters from my alphabet. I feel that I am strong
when it comes to mixing words and imagery together.

3. I have started building the foundations of my knowledge of certain software. I have learnt a range of good basic skills, and a couple of years ago I discovered vector art using Adobe Illustrator. I have won a couple of competition briefs using vector design and this has made me feel stronger as designer.

4. I also have a good basic understanding of typography and layout design. For my final major at college I decided to set myself the difficult task of designing my own magazine. I had to work hard to follow the rules of good typography and layout design but in the end I pulled it out of the bag. I had to stretch myself but by doing so I broadened my design skills.

My final major work

5. Finally I think I have good people skills and I can work as a team player. I think being able to communicate is an important skill to have when studying graphic design.

Identify and explain 5 things that you want to improve.
1. I want to improve my presentation skills because I can get quite nervous and I do not feel that confidence is my strongest point.
2. I would like to improve on saving files in a professional manner because my computer can get very confusing and unorganised.
3. I would like to improve my knowledge of software, I find more difficult tasks in programs like Photoshop quite confusing.
4. I would like to improve my knowledge on contextual areas such as the history of graphic design in more detail, as well as learn about a broad range of successful designers.
5. I would like to improve on my essay writing, crits and annotation skills. I also would like to learn how to reference my inspirations and sources in a more organised way.

Identify and explain 5 ways that you will evaluate your progress.
1. I will ask my tutors and my peers for advice
2. I will use group crits to help evaluate my work
3. I will post my work online and ask for feedback
4. I will use my blog to reflect back and annotate my work

Identify 5 questions that you want to find the answer to.
1. How do you brand yourself as a designer who is just starting off in the world?
2. How do you build a successful portfolio?
3. How do you screen print?
4. How does a letter press work?
5. How do you use flash and dreamweaver?

Level 4 Aspirations

My personal aspirations for the next year are a mixture of things that involve the BA Graphic Design course, as well as my own targets that I wont to achieve outside university.

1. Make good friends.
2. Learn to stand on my own two feet as this is the first time I have lived away from home.
3. Budget my money.
4. Create a broad range of work to add to my current portfolio.
5. Learn to tackle difficult briefs.
6. Work to a strict time scale.
7. Learn to present my work confidently to a mixture of people, for example fellow peers and clients.
8.  Pass my driving test by the end of the year.
9.  Expand my knowledge on the latest design software.
10. Experiment and expand my skills with different mediums.

Secondly, the class got put into blog groups. We shared our personal aspirations with one another and then went on to create a list of targets that we all shared and felt were most relevant as a group.

1. Learn/develop new/existing techniques, such as screen printing.
2. Develop time management/deadline skills.
3. To learn how to present confidently.
4. Improve our skills when working with both new software and those we are already familiar with.
5. Develop good financial management.
6. Make new friends/ those who we can collaborate with in the future.
7. Learn professional practices/legality for producing design in a commercial market.
8. Broaden the style and quantity of work in our portfolio in order to improve preparation  for interviews/searches for internships.
9. Keep an up to date blog.
10. Research/become aware of designers to see how they can influence our own style of work.
